A communication plan to inform the Durham community about the three-year transformation of Duke University’s campus included wall plaques, translucent window clings, illuminated kiosks holding printed monthly, bi-lingual updates, and safety barrier fence wraps.

Transformation

Duke Medicine’s three strategic building projects underway represent historic changes that will transform the face of the medical campus and advance teaching, research, and clinical care missions.

In addition, the transformation efforts reinforce the health system’s values, especially the core value of “Caring for our patients, their loved ones, and each other.”

A new Duke Cancer Center

Construction began in 2009 and was completed in 2013. The building was designed by Perkins + Will, Atlanta, and constructed by BE&K Building Group, Charlotte.

The LEED-NC Gold building was designed to promote recovery, provide family space, and facilitate knowledge-sharing. It connects to the Duke Medicine Pavilion by a two-story concourse and to the Duke Clinic by a landscaped open space called the Medical Circle Healing Garden.

The Best in Patient Care

The plaque in the above image explains to passersby about the state-of-the-art facility providing patients the most advanced multidisciplinary care from specialists in a comfortable, healing environment. The URL call-to-action is where to get up-to-date information on the progress. A key feature of the Duke Cancer Institute includes The Quiet Room, which features color-changing LED fixtures that simulate rippling water on the surface of textured glass. The room’s color can be subtly shifted from red to blue to green to yellow.

The Duke Cancer Institute is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center that offers access to clinical trials and treatments.

Informational Kiosks

Kiosks were carefully curated throughout the campus to inform visitors, patients, and the community with up-to-date notices, and general information.
